Soil Hill

The moorland around Bradford isn't what most people expect - it's genuinely worth exploring if you've got decent legs and decent weather. Soil Hill sits on that exposed West Yorkshire plateau where you can see for miles on a clear day, and it's the sort of place that transforms completely depending on conditions. On a drizzly afternoon it feels properly windswept and lonely. Come back when the sun's out and you'll understand why people bother.

It's a straightforward walk up from the surrounding villages, though nothing about the Pennines is truly flat. The view back towards Bradford and across to the moorlands beyond Harden makes it worthwhile - you're looking at proper open country, not manicured park land. The ground can be boggy underfoot, so waterproofs aren't optional. Allow an hour or so depending on your fitness and where you start from.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of peak that justifies a longer moorland walk rather than being a destination in itself. Families with younger kids might find the exposed terrain a bit much, particularly if the weather turns - there's nowhere to shelter up there. History enthusiasts won't find much to grab onto; this is about the landscape itself, not what happened on it.

Stay at Two Acre Camping or Upwood Holiday Park if you're basing yourself nearby, then use Soil Hill as part of a wider Pennine ramble. The moorlands here connect to better-known routes, so it works well as a waypoint rather than the main event.
