Barbers Gorse

You won't find Barbers Gorse on many tourist maps, which is precisely what makes it worth seeking out if you're staying in the Shifnal area. It's a proper woodland walk through native British forest - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than you'd imagine near the West Midlands.

The forest itself is compact but genuine. Paths wind through mature deciduous woodland, with the ground cover changing seasonally. Spring brings bluebells that genuinely take your breath away; autumn offers that rich, quiet crunch underfoot. There's nothing flashy about it - no visitor centre, no facilities - but that's the appeal. Come here for a couple of hours of undemanding woodland rambling, not for a day-long expedition.

Families with younger children will manage fine on the main paths, though buggies would be a struggle in places. Walkers wanting to escape the caravan park crowds will appreciate the solitude. History enthusiasts might struggle - there's nothing particularly ancient on show, just honest woodland doing what it's done for centuries.

Access appears to be free, and there's no obvious reason you'd need to plan around opening hours. If you're based at High Onn Holiday Park just down the road, Barbers Gorse makes for a straightforward afternoon detour. Don't expect drama, but do expect to actually feel like you've stepped away from things. In Staffordshire, that's worth something.
