Banchory Academy Playing Fields

Just outside Banchory, the Academy Playing Fields are less about manicured pitches and more about genuine countryside access. This is proper grassland with woodland edges, the sort of place locals actually use rather than tour coaches queuing up. You get open fields, some tree cover, and if you time it right, decent bird spotting along the edges where the Feugh meets the surrounding scrub.

It's straightforward terrain, no major climbs or obstacles, so families with younger kids manage it fine. The real appeal is the walk itself rather than any single focal point - you're out in proper Aberdeenshire highland fringe landscape without the crowds of the more famous spots. Allow an hour if you're meandering, half that if you just want a quick stretch of the legs.

Walkers and people after genuine green space will get more from this than casual visitors expecting facilities or interpretation boards. There isn't much signage, which is either refreshing or frustrating depending on your mood. Bring decent footwear - it's open grassland so nothing extreme, but after rain it's genuinely boggy in places.

With Silverbank and Banchory Lodge caravan parks both within walking distance - seriously, under a mile - this sits nicely as part of a quieter Deeside break rather than a standalone destination. It's the sort of place you'd build into a morning before heading to somewhere with more formal attractions. Free access, no complications, and Banchory itself has decent shops and cafes if you need them after.
