Banc-Y-Groes

The climb up Banc-Y-Groes takes you into proper Mid Wales moorland, where the landscape opens up in ways you won't find in the valleys below. It's a straightforward walk from Llanidloes, gaining height steadily through bracken and rough grass until you break onto the summit plateau. The views aren't dramatic in the Alpine sense, but they're genuinely far-reaching - you get a real sense of how much empty space there is out here, rolling hills stretching away in all directions.

Walkers and hikers are the obvious audience here. It's not a scramble or anything technical, just a solid moorland trudge that rewards effort with proper elevation. Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, longer if you want to explore the plateau properly. There's no facilities on the mountain itself - pack water and something to eat.

The beauty of tackling this from a caravan base is how it fits into a wider walking holiday around Llanidloes. Red Kite Touring Park, Clywedog Riverside, Dol-Llys Farm, and Glangwy Farm Camping all sit within striking distance, making this an easy half-day or full-day excursion between other explorations. It's not a major tourist draw with queues and visitor centres - this is genuine upland Wales where you're likely to have the place largely to yourself. Good boots matter more than good weather forecasts, because weather changes up here constantly.
