Balnacrae Chambered Cairn

You'll find yourself standing in front of a pile of stones that's actually 5,000 years old - which is rather a lot to process while staring at what looks like a Bronze Age tomb. Balnacrae Chambered Cairn, a short drive from Dingwall, is one of those attractions that rewards the curious but won't keep you entertained for hours on end.

It's a genuine Neolithic burial structure, still imposing despite the centuries. The chamber is accessible if you're willing to duck and squeeze a bit - proper claustrophobic work, but genuinely atmospheric once you're inside. The setting on the Highland moorland is the real draw here: you get a genuine sense of why ancient peoples chose this spot, elevated and commanding.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, especially if you're building a route around Dingwall's other archaeological sites. Families with young kids might manage 20 minutes, though it's not exactly interactive. Serious walkers should budget 45 minutes to an hour including the approach. Go when the light's decent - the Highlands can turn grey fast, and grey moorland photos do nobody any favours.
