Balmaclellan Crimean War Memorial

A granite obelisk stands in the churchyard at Balmaclellan, about five miles from Castle Douglas, marking an unlikely chapter in British military history. It's a memorial to the local soldiers who died in the Crimean War - that grim, muddy, mismanaged conflict of the 1850s that killed more men through disease than through actual fighting.

If you're based at Loch Ken Holiday Park, it's barely half an hour's drive away and breaks up a day nicely between walking routes and other local attractions. Worth the detour only if military history genuinely interests you.
