Ball's Brake

Ball's Brake is a proper woodland walk just outside Chippenham - the sort of place locals know about but most visitors miss entirely. It's a mixed forest with decent-sized trees, open glades, and paths that meander through without much fanfare or signposting, which honestly adds to the charm if you don't mind a bit of navigation.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. There are no facilities, no visitor centre, no tea hut. You park somewhere sensible nearby and head in on foot. The trees are tall enough to feel like you've actually escaped, and in spring the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells. Dogs love it. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before everyone gets bored, but serious walkers can easily spend half a day poking around the different paths.

Timing-wise, go on a weekday morning if you can - weekends get busier than you'd expect for such a low-key spot. It's free, naturally, since there's nothing to charge for. The forest works brilliantly as a half-day activity alongside a proper park holiday in the area. The Retreat Glamping and The Moors Campsite are both close enough that you could do this on a morning before heading back for lunch, or it pairs well with a walk round Bowood House's grounds if you fancy something with a bit more structure.
