Ballachulish Bridge

You'll spot this steel arch bridge long before you reach Ballachulish - it's quite a statement, that pale blue structure spanning across Loch Leven. Built in 1975, it's the sort of engineering that makes you stop and actually look, especially when the light catches it properly in late afternoon.

Walking or driving across gives you proper views down the loch towards Glencoe, and there's something satisfying about the sheer scale of it. The bridge itself is free to cross, and you can pull in at the car park on the Ballachulish side if you want to get out and shoot photos or just appreciate the setting. Fair warning though - if you're expecting quaint village charm, Ballachulish itself is fairly no-nonsense. It's a working place, not a tourist bubble.

This is really worth the stop if you're already driving through the Highlands rather than a destination in itself. Walkers will find good paths in the surrounding glens, and it's genuinely useful if you're heading between Oban and the Fort William direction. The bridge cuts through some genuinely impressive landscape.

If you're based at Invercoe Caravan & Motorhome Park or Red Squirrel Campsite Scotland, both just a few miles away, the bridge is handy for a short leg-stretch break between longer explorations. Allow ten minutes to half an hour depending on how much you want to linger with the views. It's one of those places that's absolutely worth knowing about if you're doing a Highland trip, but don't make a special journey for it alone.
