Ball Down

The walk up Ball Down, just outside Winchester, is straightforward enough - a gentle climb that rewards you with proper views across the Hampshire countryside. It's not a dramatic peak, but on a clear day you can see for miles, which makes the effort worthwhile.

The summit itself is fairly modest. There's no dramatic outcrop or windswept cairn to point at - just open downland with chalk grassland underfoot. What makes it work is the walk itself rather than any single standout moment. The route takes you through proper English rural landscape, the kind you drive past without really noticing. Up close, it's more interesting than you'd expect.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not strenuous - probably forty minutes up and the same back - but it requires actual walking rather than just shuffling around a car park.
