Balkerne Gate

You're standing in front of the most substantial Roman gateway still standing in Britain, and it hits you immediately - this thing has genuinely been here for nearly 2,000 years. Balkerne Gate is what remains of Colchester's Roman defences, built around 80 AD when the town was Camulodunum, a major settlement in the empire. You need to use your imagination a bit; it's not dramatic reconstructions or interactive displays, just the bones of it. Most people spend fifteen to twenty minutes here, reading the information board and photographing it from different angles. Kids under ten might find it underwhelming - it's essentially a big brick structure with limited hands-on elements.
