Balhomish Loch

Water this still and dark doesn't come around often. Balhomish Loch sits in the Perthshire hills just outside Dunkeld, and it's the sort of place that stops you mid-walk. The loch itself isn't huge - you can take it in from several angles without much effort - but there's something about the way it mirrors the surrounding woodland that makes it worth the detour.

It's genuinely peaceful here. No facilities, no crowds, just water and trees. Walkers will appreciate it most; there are decent paths around the perimeter, and the whole circuit takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace. If you're after a short stroll with real scenery, this delivers better than a lot of the honeypot spots nearby.

The location works well if you're based at either Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park or Erigmore Holiday Park - both are less than two miles away - making it an obvious half-day outing. Come early morning or late afternoon for the light; midday can feel a bit flat.

Historically minded visitors won't find much interpretation here, but the landscape tells its own story. It's the kind of loch that works best when you've got time to sit by it rather than just photograph it and move on. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet after the initial novelty wears off, but anyone who enjoys proper Scottish scenery without the Instagram queues will rate it.
