Balfron Library

You'll walk past a brutalist concrete fortress that looks more like a Cold War bunker than a library - and that's precisely the point. Balfron Library, designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh's contemporary, is a stunning example of 1960s modernist design that divides opinion spectacularly. Some find it austere and unwelcoming; others see it as architectural gold.

Inside, it's a proper working library serving Stirling, not a museum piece. You can browse the local studies section, grab a coffee, or just stand under those soaring ceilings and marvel at how boldly different it is from every other library you've visited. The building itself is the attraction here - the dramatic tower, the sculptural concrete forms, the way light floods through the spaces. Photography enthusiasts and architecture students make the pilgrimage regularly.

It's free to wander in during opening hours, though do note the restricted times - closed lunchtimes and not open weekends beyond Saturday mornings. Allow 45 minutes if you're serious about it; 20 minutes if you're just after photos. History buffs and design nerds will get far more from it than casual browsers.

Glasgow's only 30 miles south if you're doing a broader Scottish trip, and the glamping pods scattered around Loch Lomond - Endrick Escape, Arcadia, Loch Lomond Sunset - put you within easy reach for a weekend. Balfron works best as part of a Stirling visit rather than a standalone destination, but if you care about twentieth-century architecture, it's worth the detour.
