Backfield Clump

A small wooded pocket near Biggar that most people drive straight past without noticing. Backfield Clump isn't dramatic - no thundering waterfalls, no ancient ruins - but it's the kind of place where you remember why you came to Scotland in the first place.

It's proper woodland walking territory. You get trees, birdsong, and the sort of quiet that actually means something. Fifteen minutes in and the A73 feels miles away. The paths wind through mixed forest - nothing too taxing, which makes it ideal if you've got children who aren't yet ready for serious hill walking, or if you just fancy a gentle leg-stretch between drives.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this is your local. A quick stop to burn off energy without committing to a two-hour tramp. The woodland has that intimate, slightly secretive feel - not a tourist destination, just actual forest where locals come to walk their dogs and escape for twenty minutes.

Timing-wise, give yourself half an hour to forty-five minutes if you're just wandering. It's free, naturally, and there's nowhere to buy a coffee, so plan accordingly. Spring and early summer are best when the canopy's thick and there's something happening overhead.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth knowing about if you're exploring the Biggar area. It fills that gap between your holiday park and a proper day out.
