Back Tor

Back Tor is a proper fell-walk destination rather than a quick roadside stop. From Hope Valley, you're looking at a decent hike up onto this peak - the sort of walk that takes two to three hours round trip depending on your pace and which route you choose. The views across the Dark Peak are excellent once you've earned them, with Mam Tor and other high moorland visible on clear days.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. If you're after a casual stroll with the kids, you'll want somewhere else. But if you've got keen hikers in the group, Back Tor works as a proper objective - something to aim for rather than just amble round. The ground underfoot gets boggy in places after rain, and the wind can be sharp up there, so come prepared.

It's free to access, as with most of the Peak District's open moorland. No visitor centre, no facilities at the summit - just you, the weather, and the landscape. That's rather the point. The walk itself is the attraction; the peak is the reward.

If you're camping in the area - and there are several sites within five miles including North Lees Campsite and East Peak Campsite - Back Tor makes a good day out between lazy mornings at camp. Pair it with Mam Tor, which is nearby and slightly busier, and you've got a solid two-day walking itinerary. Start early to avoid the afternoon crowds and the worst of the weather.
