Aytonhill

The walk up Aytonhill rewards you with proper views across Fife once you've done the legwork. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like Ben Lomond or the higher Tay Valley ridges - but that's rather the point. This is accessible hillwalking territory, the sort of place where a decent pair of boots and an hour or so of your time gets you somewhere genuinely worthwhile.

The summit sits just outside Cupar, making it ideal if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks. Snugs at Logie Farm is barely half a mile away, so you could knock this off before breakfast if you fancied. The views sweep across farmland and woodland, and on a clear day you'll spot the Lammermuirs to the south. It's the kind of vantage point that makes you understand why someone built a settlement here centuries ago.

There's nothing fancy waiting for you at the top - no cafe, no visitor centre, just a marker and the satisfaction of having climbed it. The route is straightforward rather than technical, so families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the trudge tedious. Allow ninety minutes there and back if you take it slowly.

Best visited when the ground's dry. Muddy paths and steeper sections aren't forgiving, and the whole thing becomes a proper slog when it's wet. Annsmuir Parkhome is another option if you want to stay nearby and explore the wider area - Aytonhill pairs well with a broader Fife walking itinerary rather than being a day-trip destination on its own.
