Avon Meadows Community Wetland

The Avon Meadows near Pershore is one of those places that creeps up on you. What starts as a casual riverside walk becomes genuinely absorbing - you'll find yourself stopping every fifty metres to spot something new. It's a proper wetland reserve where the Avon floods naturally each winter, creating ideal conditions for wading birds, water voles, and the sort of insect life that makes naturalists lose track of time.

You'll walk through wet grassland and alongside reed beds, with viewing areas positioned so you can actually see what's happening rather than just squinting at distant reeds. Spring and early summer are cracking for birdwatching - lapwings, snipe, and grebes all show up reliably. Autumn migration brings different species altogether. Even winter has its appeal if you don't mind wet boots.

The walk itself isn't strenuous, but parts can get boggy, so proper footwear matters. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about looking around; an hour is enough if you're just passing through. Families with patient children will enjoy it more than those expecting dramatic scenery. The nearest town, Pershore, is close by, making this ideal as a morning activity before heading to one of the local glamping retreats or caravan parks - Bredon View Glamping or The Springs are within easy reach, about a mile away.

It's free and accessible, run by a community group. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. Honestly, if you're staying in the area for a park holiday, it deserves a visit. Not flashy, but proper wildlife watching.
