Aukside Plantation

Walking into Aukside Plantation feels like stepping off the map entirely. This sprawling woodland sits just outside Barnard Castle and offers the kind of quiet that actually matters when you've spent the morning dodging tourists in town.

It's a proper forest - the sort with uneven paths, dappled light through the canopy, and enough trees to genuinely get lost in if you're not paying attention. The main appeal is straightforward: good woodland walking with decent terrain for a range of abilities. You'll find yourself among conifers and mixed woodland, with the Tees Valley rolling out beyond the tree line on clearer days.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready, but that's rather the point. Kids can run about without too much fear, though younger ones might find the paths a bit rough underfoot. History enthusiasts probably won't find much to grab onto here - it's woodland for its own sake, not heritage.

Allow two hours for a decent circuit, longer if you're meandering. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so bring water and come with realistic expectations. Best visited in autumn when the light changes hourly, though winter reveals the woodland structure better.

If you're staying at Hill Top Huts or Doe Park Caravan Park nearby, this is an easy add-on for a morning walk. It works well combined with a Barnard Castle visit - break up the day with actual forest air rather than gift shop browsing.
