Attenborough Nature Centre

The River Trent runs right through this nature reserve just south of Nottingham, and it's where the Attenborough Centre sits - part visitor hub, part serious wildlife spot. Inside you'll find displays about local habitats, a café, and big windows looking out over the lakes and wetland areas. The real magic happens outside though. There are proper walking trails that take you round flooded gravel pits that have become havens for wading birds, dragonflies, and the occasional otter if you're lucky enough.

Walkers and birdwatchers will spend a solid half-day here without feeling rushed. Families with younger kids get about an hour's entertainment from the centre itself, then another hour on the easier paths - the muddy bits can be testing in wet weather, so wellies are sensible. Photographers come for the birds; naturalists come for the ecology lesson.

Access is free to the reserve and trails, though the visitor centre may charge for entry - best to ring ahead or check online before you visit. Spring and autumn are peak times for bird migration, which makes them cracking seasons to go. Summer's quieter but warm. Winter can be bleak and wet, though you'll have the paths largely to yourself.

It links well with a park holiday - Holme Pierrepont Campsite and Caravan Park are both within six miles, making Attenborough a reasonable day trip from base. Combine it with a walk along the Nottinghamshire Way for a proper outdoor day.
