Atherstone Locks

The Coventry Canal drops eleven metres through Atherstone Locks, a series of eleven narrow locks that create one of the Midlands' most dramatic waterway engineering feats. It's proper canal country - the kind of place where you can spend twenty minutes just watching a narrowboat squeeze through, or an hour if you're the type who enjoys mechanical puzzles in brick and cast iron.

These locks have been working since 1769, and they still do the job without fuss. The flight climbs steeply, so the towpath alongside gets a decent workout, but the views back over the town make it worthwhile. You'll see working boaters managing the locks themselves, which beats any museum display for understanding how the system actually functions.

Walkers get the most from this. It's free to visit and watch, takes about an hour to properly explore the whole flight and grab some photos. Best visited mid-morning when you've got a decent chance of seeing boats working through - rainy days bring fewer visitors, so you get a quieter experience. The town of Atherstone itself sits right there, so you can combine it with a wander through the high street or a coffee break.

It's the sort of spot that doesn't demand half a day, but rewards a morning spent properly paying attention. Canal enthusiasts will find it compelling; families with young kids might manage thirty minutes before restlessness sets in.
