Ashwood Park

Ashwood Park is a proper nature reserve tucked into the Staffordshire countryside, though honestly it's one of those places you need to know about beforehand because signage isn't exactly comprehensive. The reserve itself consists of woodland and open grassland - the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think, which is increasingly rare. Expect to see native trees, a decent selection of birds if you're patient, and in spring the wildflowers make it worth the visit alone.

Walkers will get the most from Ashwood Park. It's not a destination that demands hours - more like a solid hour to ninety minutes of wandering depending on how much you linger - but it's the sort of place where that time feels properly restorative. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though very young children might find the paths a bit repetitive. There's nothing flashy here: no visitor centre, no café, no playground. It's just woods and grass and whatever you bring to it.

The reserve works well as a breather during a peak district holiday. You're only a handful of miles from Buxton, and if you're camping at one of the nearby parks like Beech Croft Farm or Peak Glamping Hideaway, Ashwood Park makes for an easy morning or late afternoon loop. It's not going to rival your main attractions, but that's rather the point - sometimes you want to step away from the honeypot sites and just breathe in some genuine countryside. Free access and no time pressure means you can stay five minutes or stay long enough to actually notice what's living there.
