Ashtead Roman villa

The remains of a Roman villa lie tucked into the Surrey countryside near Chessington, and while there's not much to look at above ground, the site tells a proper story if you know where to read it. What you're standing on is the footprint of a substantial house dating back to around the 2nd century AD - the kind of place a wealthy Romano-British family would have called home during the occupation.

The excavations happened decades ago, so don't expect dramatic ruins or reconstructed walls. Instead, you get a quieter kind of archaeology: the shape of the land, some stone foundations if you're lucky with visibility, and a sense of where the rooms once were. It's the sort of place that appeals to history types and anyone curious about how Romans actually lived in Britain beyond the forts and major towns. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already into archaeology - it requires imagination rather than spectacle.

There's no formal visitor infrastructure here, which means it's free to visit and you can turn up anytime, though checking local conditions beforehand makes sense. Allow 30 minutes to an hour wandering the site and taking in the context. The nearest proper base would be Chessington, though if you're camping at Polyapes Scout Campsite or Embers Camping near Polesden Lacey, you're well within striking distance for a half-day detour. Best combined with a walk through Norbury Park's woodland trails - they're close by and far more dramatic than the villa site alone.
