Telegraph Hill

Free views across Surrey sprawl out before you from this 170-metre hill just south of Chessington. Telegraph Hill earns its name from the old semaphore station that once crowned its summit, part of the communication chain linking London to Portsmouth. Today, walkers come for the panoramic views that stretch from Epsom Downs to the North Downs on a clear day.

The climb itself is proper steep in places - not one for the pushchair brigade. Expect a decent workout on the way up through mixed woodland, though the paths are well-maintained. At the top, you'll find a cleared viewing area where the old telegraph station stood. The vista rewards your effort: rolling Surrey countryside dotted with church spires, the occasional glimpse of London's towers on the horizon.

History buffs will appreciate the information boards explaining the semaphore system, while families with older children (say 8+) will enjoy the adventure of the woodland paths. Allow an hour return from the car park, longer if you're dawdling for photos. Best visited on weekdays when it's quieter - weekends can get busy with local dog walkers.
