Ashley Wood

The woodland around Ashley Wood, just outside Stockbridge, is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's proper forest - dense in places, with decent paths that actually feel like paths rather than muddy death traps. The trees here are tall enough that you forget you're in Hampshire, especially on overcast days when the light filters through in that grey-green way that makes everything feel a bit removed from the world.

This is walker territory, no question. You're looking at a solid two to three hours if you want to see the wood properly without rushing. Families with younger kids might get restless after an hour, though there's enough space to let them burn energy without genuine risk. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on whether you've got proper boots.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Bring water, maybe pack something to eat. The closest proper services are back in Stockbridge itself, which is a pleasant market town and worth a wander before or after.

If you're based at Stockbridge View or The Meadow Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. It's the sort of place that fills the gaps in a park holiday without demanding much planning - no entry fees to worry about, no queues, just woodland and decent air. Not Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point.
