Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve

Steep chalk cliffs covered in beech woodland - that's what stops you in your tracks at Ashford Hangers. It's a proper Surrey-Sussex sort of landscape, except you're in Hampshire just outside Petersfield. The reserve protects these hanging woods that cling to the valley sides, and walking through them feels like being inside something genuinely wild, even though you're never far from civilisation.

The trails wind through dense beech forest with occasional viewpoints where the ground drops away sharply below you. It's not a casual stroll - the paths are steep in places and can be muddy, especially after rain. Most people allow an hour to two hours depending on which route you take. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the climbs frustrating.

History buffs get something too. The hangers are ancient woodland, and you can read the landscape itself - the way the trees grip the slope tells you this is old, old land. Walkers and photographers are the real audience here though. The light through the beech canopy in autumn is genuinely worth the trek.

Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. The nearest proper base is Petersfield, but staying at Adhurst Yurts just up the road gives you easy access to both the reserve and wider South Downs walking. Cedar Valley and Feather Down Manor Farm are decent alternatives if Adhurst's booked. Early morning visits beat the weekend crowds.
