Ashes Eller Bank

The walk up Ashes Eller Bank rewards you with proper fell views once you've made the effort. It's a modest peak in the Carnforth area, nothing that'll take your breath away in the dramatic sense, but rather in the physical exertion required to get there. The climb is straightforward if a bit grinding, and from the top you get those expansive Yorkshire vistas that make the leg work feel worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination you'd drive to for the view alone, but if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Philpin Farm or Ribblesdale Pods are both excellent - it's a solid half-day outing. The latter's glamping pods mean you can ease into a proper walk without feeling like you've roughed it the night before. Bring a packed lunch and make an afternoon of it.

Families with older kids who can manage a couple of hours on their feet will be fine. Younger ones might find it tedious, truth be told. There's nothing commercial at the top - no cafe, no visitor centre - so you're coming for the walk itself and the sense of achievement. Allow a good two to three hours depending on your fitness and the route you take. Autumn's probably best, when the moorland colours are on and you're not melting in full sun.
