Ash Grove

The woodland here is proper dense - tall trees, dappled light filtering through, the kind of place where you actually feel like you've stepped away from Essex rather than just wandered into the next village over. Ash Grove sits east of Royston and makes for a straightforward walk if you're staying at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby.

It's not a destination on its own, to be honest. What you get is woodland paths, fresh air, and the chance to spot whatever wildlife happens to be about on the day. Decent for families with younger kids who like a gentle ramble without commitment - you can do a loop in under an hour and call it a morning. Walkers won't find anything particularly challenging here, but it's the sort of place that clears your head between other activities.

Bring waterproof shoes. The ground can be muddy even days after rain, and there's not much shelter if the weather turns. Spring and autumn are probably best - too many midges in summer, and winter can feel a bit bleak in among the bare branches.

The real appeal is that it's low-stress. No entrance fees, no time limits, no pressure. If you're camped at Pightle and fancy a walk that doesn't require planning, this works. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than specifically drive across Essex for, though it makes a nice break if you're in the area exploring.
