Ash Copse

A proper woodland walk through beech and ash trees, Ash Copse sits just outside Swindon and gives you that lovely sense of escaping the town without actually going far. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels sheltered, and the forest floor is soft underfoot - good for boots rather than trainers if there's been rain.

It's the sort of place that works best for families with kids old enough to walk without complaining, or anyone after a quiet hour among the trees. You won't find dramatic views or adventure playground equipment here. What you get is space to breathe and proper woodland atmosphere. Walkers and dog owners use it regularly, which speaks volumes about the track conditions.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much you dawdle. There's no entrance fee that I could find, and no facilities to speak of, so bring water if you're planning a longer stay. It's at its best in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn when the leaves turn is equally good.

If you're based at Great Farm - the five-star rated park just 1.8 miles away - this makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. Second Chance is similarly close at 1.7 miles. Neither are thrilling spots for a full day out, but as part of a wider exploration of the Gloucestershire countryside, it serves its purpose well. The proximity to Swindon means you're not completely cut off from amenities either.
