It's peaceful without being austere, and the whole place has this genuine sense of purpose that you can almost feel the moment you arrive.

It's not a quick tick-box visit. This is somewhere to sit quietly, maybe walk the grounds, chat to monks if they're around and willing. Families with restless kids will struggle - expect at least an hour if you want to get anything from it, longer if you're genuinely interested. Walkers and anyone after a bit of spiritual breathing space will find it worthwhile. The site's only about twenty minutes from Newcastle, so it's manageable as a half-day trip.

Head here midweek if you can. Weekends draw more casual visitors and it affects the atmosphere. It's free to visit the grounds, though donations support the monastery.
