Arnside Tower

You'll spot this sturdy four-storey pele tower rising from the village of Arnside, just outside Carnforth, the moment you round the bend. It's a proper piece of working history - built in the 14th century as a defensive stronghold when Scottish raiders were a genuine threat to Lancashire's coastal communities. The tower still stands exactly where it was meant to, a squat grey sentinel watching over what used to be a very dangerous border.

Clamber up the narrow spiral staircase inside and you get views across the Kent estuary toward Morecambe Bay. It's not a lengthy visit - forty minutes maximum if you're being thorough - but the climb rewards you with a real sense of how these border communities once lived, cramped and ready to defend themselves at short notice.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from this one. It's not exactly a blockbuster attraction with interactive displays or lengthy interpretive panels, just an authentic medieval tower you can actually explore. Families with younger kids might find the stairs a squeeze and the visit a touch brief for their patience.

The tower sits perfectly into a wider Arnside walk - the village itself sprawls along the estuary with good footpaths, and you're barely two miles from Holgates Holiday Parks if you're basing yourself there. It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're already rambling the area rather than a reason to make a special trip on its own, but it's absolutely worth fifteen minutes if you're passing through Carnforth.
