Armstrong's Crossing Wood

A proper woodland walk without the crowds. Armstrong's Crossing Wood sits just outside Preston and offers exactly what you need if you've wound up at one of the nearby caravan sites and fancy stretching your legs without driving half an hour up to the Lake District.

It's a straightforward forest - mixed woodland with paths that won't tax you, ideal for families with younger kids or anyone wanting a gentle hour in the trees. The walking routes are logical enough that you won't spend twenty minutes arguing over which way to go, which is something. The woodland floor gets boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.

Who gets most from it? Dog walkers, definitely. Parents after a midweek break between sites. Birdwatchers might spend a couple of hours here, though it's not exceptional for that. History buffs won't find much - it's just trees, paths, the occasional bench. You're looking at one to two hours maximum unless you're the sort who stops to identify every plant.

Getting there from North View or Moss Rose Caravan Sites is straightforward - nothing more than a few minutes' drive. It won't blow your mind, but it's free (almost certainly) and solves the "we need to do something outdoors today" problem without faffing about. Pack a thermos, bring the kids' scooters if they've got them, and you're sorted. On a drizzly Lancashire afternoon, it does the job.
