Arms Tor

The walk up Arms Tor rewards you with one of Dartmoor's sharpest moorland views, and it won't take you all day to get there. The tor itself is a modest rocky outcrop near Okehampton, but the 360-degree perspective across open moorland feels properly expansive once you're up top. On a clear day you'll spot way out across Devon. The ascent is straightforward enough - maybe 20 to 30 minutes from the car park depending on your fitness - and the path is well-trodden without being overcrowded.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young kids might find the exposed ridge a bit much, and there's not a lot to hold attention if you're after a destination café or visitor centre. The rocks themselves are worth scrambling over if you're that way inclined, though nothing technical. It's the kind of spot where you go for the walk rather than the place.

If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, Arms Tor makes for a cracking morning outing before heading elsewhere on Dartmoor. The lack of facilities means you'll need water and a packed lunch if you're stopping a while. Spring and early summer are best - the moorland's at its most interesting then, and you'll avoid the worst of winter mud. The whole experience, walk included, eats up a couple of hours comfortably. Worth the detour if you're already in the area exploring Dartmoor's tors.
