Ardbeg Distillery

The peat smoke hits you before you even step inside the visitor centre. Ardbeg sits on the southern tip of Islay, and if you're expecting a polished corporate tour, you'll be pleasantly surprised - there's genuine character here, the sort that comes from making proper whisky rather than chasing marketing angles.

You'll walk through the distillery itself, see the stills, smell the malting floors. The tour guides actually know what they're talking about, which makes a difference when you're learning why Islay whiskies taste like they've been smoked over a bonfire. The tasting at the end is where it pays for itself - you're not getting a thimble of something watered down. The visitor centre has a decent café if you need to soak up the dram.

Allow two to three hours minimum. History buffs will dig the distillery's story, but honestly, you need to like whisky or at least be curious about it to get real value. Families with young kids might find it a bit specialist - there's not much to occupy them while adults are swirling samples.

Ardbeg doesn't charge for general access to the visitor centre, though tastings and tours do cost. It's worth building into a longer Islay trip rather than a flying visit. If you're staying at Islay Glamping Pods just down the road, you can either walk off a heavy pour or head back for a proper kip. Winter gales make the place atmospheric; summer's calmer but busier.
