Arbroath West Kirk

The red sandstone kirk that dominates Arbroath's skyline isn't what you'd call hidden - it's impossible to miss. Built in the 1880s, West Kirk sits in the heart of town with an imposing Victorian presence that feels almost out of proportion to the surrounding streets. Step inside and you'll find decent stained glass and that particular quiet that old Scottish churches do so well, though it's hardly going to blow your mind if you're not particularly into ecclesiastical architecture.

It works best if you're already in Arbroath poking around the abbey or wandering the high street. The kirk itself won't take more than twenty minutes unless you're genuinely fascinated by Victorian church design, which fair play to you if you are. Free entry, naturally. Families with restless kids might find it a bit of a slog - there's not much to do beyond looking at stonework and reading plaques.

If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just down the road, you could easily slot this into a morning before heading to the abbey, which is the real draw in these parts. The location works as part of a larger wander around town rather than a destination in itself. On a decent day, climb up to the viewpoint near the kirk for views across the coast towards Dundee - that's probably more worthwhile than the building itself if you're honest about it.
