Arbory Hill Fort

Climbing up to Arbory Hill Fort near Biggar feels like stepping into something genuinely old. The fort sits on raised ground with decent views across the Lowlands, and you can still make out the defensive ditches and ramparts that would have protected whoever lived here centuries ago. It's a proper hillfort - the kind of place that reminds you this landscape has been lived in and fought over for a very long time.

Historically minded visitors will find the most to chew on here. The earthworks are substantial enough to read, even if nothing much is left standing. Kids might enjoy the walk up and the scramble around the ditches, though it's not a destination that'll keep under-tens entertained for hours. Walkers heading from Mount View Caravan Park (just 0.7 miles away) could easily fit this into a morning circuit without breaking stride.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no shop, no admission fee to worry about. Turn up when you fancy. The walk itself takes maybe twenty minutes from the car, depending on fitness. The grass can be boggy in wet weather, so check conditions first. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying locally or passing through Biggar. It's not flashy, but it's real archaeology you can walk around rather than read about behind glass.
