Arbory Hill

The walk up Arbory Hill is a proper little lung-buster, but you're rewarded with views across South Lanarkshire that make the climb feel worthwhile. It's not a mountain - more a sturdy hill that takes about an hour to reach the summit from the Biggar side - but that's precisely what makes it manageable for most people. The terrain is open moorland with a mix of grassy paths and rougher ground underfoot, so decent boots are a good shout rather than trainers.

On a clear day you can see right across the Lowlands, which beats staring at your phone in Biggar town centre by some margin. It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely enjoy themselves rather than posting pictures for Instagram. The summit marker is modest but unmissable once you're up there. A couple of hours total is realistic if you take a breather at the top.

Families with older kids will find this doable, though younger ones might flag halfway up - the path is straightforward enough but relentless. If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing. There's nothing fancy nearby, no tea van or visitor centre, so bring water and a snack. Weather can turn quickly up here, so check the forecast before you head out. Free to walk, naturally.
