Arbor Low

Forty-six massive limestone slabs lie flat on this windswept plateau, creating one of Britain's most atmospheric stone circles. Unlike Stonehenge, all the stones at Arbor Low have toppled over, earning it the nickname 'the Stonehenge of the Peaks'. Walking among these fallen giants feels properly ancient - you can almost hear the echoes of Bronze Age ceremonies carried on the Derbyshire wind.

The site sits about six miles south of Buxton, accessible via a short but muddy walk across farmland. Gib Hill, a Neolithic burial mound, stands nearby and is worth the extra few steps. Together, they make for a fascinating glimpse into our prehistoric past.

History buffs will love the theories about its original purpose - was it a temple, a burial site, or an ancient calendar? The jury's still out. Families with older children who can manage the walk will find it engaging, though little ones might get restless after twenty minutes of fallen stones. The exposed location means proper walking gear is essential whatever the weather.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Newhaven Holiday Park or Lathkill Wild Campsite, it makes for a decent half-day trip. The walk takes about an hour including exploration time, and it's free to visit. Best combined with Buxton's attractions for a full day out in the Peak District.
