An t-Sròn

The ridge walk up An t-Sròn is deceptively straightforward on the map and considerably less so once your boots hit the path. This 1,329-metre peak sits just outside Ballachulish, making it an obvious pull for anyone based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Invercoe, yet it rarely feels crowded despite the proximity to the main road.

The ascent starts gentle enough through mixed woodland before the terrain steepens and the real climbing begins. You're rewarded on the upper slopes with sudden, proper views across Loch Leven - the kind that make you stop thinking about your burning calves for a moment. The rocky summit itself is small and exposed, which means the wind can be bracing even when conditions down below seem calm.

This works best for keen walkers who've got the legs for a couple of hours on unrelenting terrain. It's not technical scrambling, but the path is rough in places and loose sections near the top demand attention. Allow three hours minimum, four if you're taking it steady or want to linger at the top with a thermos.

Timing matters here. Early morning in decent weather, before the glen warms up and clouds roll in, is your best bet. The walk sits well within a Glencoe holiday if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - it's the sort of accessible peak that pays you back immediately for the effort, without requiring specialist kit or a full day's commitment.
