An Creagán

An Creagán sits on the slopes above Cookstown, a proper viewpoint rather than a manicured tourist stop. On a clear day, you're looking out across the Sperrins and towards Lough Neagh - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people have lived in this corner of Ulster for centuries.

It's not dramatic in the Instagram sense. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no queue of tour buses. Just the landscape itself, which is exactly why it's worth the detour. If you're walking the Sperrins foothills or based at one of the local glamping spots like Sperrinview a few miles away, it's a straightforward outing that takes an hour or so from start to finish. The walk itself is gentle enough for families, though sturdy shoes help on the boggy bits.

History types will appreciate the Bronze Age cairns and standing stones scattered about - An Creagán means 'the rock' in Irish, and Bronze Age people clearly thought it was significant. The archaeology isn't flashy, but it's real, and the landscape tells you more than any plaque could.

Go early morning if you can. The light is better, and you'll have the place to yourself. Afternoon fog can roll in and spoil the view entirely, so check the weather before you commit. There's no admission fee - it's open country - and parking is basic but adequate. Allow longer if you're interested in the archaeology, though you'll need a guidebook or local knowledge to make sense of what you're looking at.
