American Air Museum

The American Air Museum sits within the Imperial War Museum's Duxford airfield site, about half an hour south of Royston. It's a serious collection - rows of actual flyable American aircraft from World War II onwards, housed in a vast aluminium-clad building that somehow doesn't feel cold or corporate. You walk among Mustangs, Liberators, and Thunderbolts that actually saw combat. There's also a B-17 you can walk through, which is the real draw for most visitors. The fuselage is tight, cramped, genuinely claustrophobic - it hits home what those crews endured.

This is squarely for aviation enthusiasts and military history buffs. Kids enjoy it if they're old enough to understand what they're looking at; toddlers will get restless between the planes. Plan two to three hours minimum if you're taking it seriously. The whole Duxford site (admission charged, though the website can tell you current prices) includes other museums and hangars - you could easily spend a full day there if the weather turns.

Royston's only a short drive away if you need lunch or supplies. Pightle Farm Campsite, just 3.5 miles off, makes for a convenient base - you can do the museum without rushing. The American Air Museum itself doesn't feel rushed either, which is worth noting. It's respectfully done, proper curatorial stuff, not theme-park theatrics.
