Am Binneag

The walk up Am Binneag from Tarbert takes you straight into proper Argyll hill country - steep, grassy, and completely unforgiving if the weather turns. It's not a long route, but it climbs relentlessly, and the path disappears and reappears depending on how recently locals have been trampling it. What makes it worth the slog is the view down Loch Fyne once you crest the ridge. On a clear day, you can see right down the loch toward Inveraray, with the Cowal hills rising on the far shore. The summit itself is a modest bump rather than a dramatic peak, but that's rather the point - this is proper walking country, not Instagram tourism.

On a practical level, give yourself two hours there and back from the trailhead near Tarbert. Bring decent boots because it gets boggy, and a waterproof because the Argyll weather has a habit of swooping in without warning. The climb is manageable for fit teenagers and adults, though it's not a family stroll. You'll see maybe a handful of other walkers on weekdays; weekends are busier but still genuinely quiet compared to the honeypot hills further south.

If you're based at Port Ban Holiday Park just down the coast, it's an excellent afternoon outing - close enough to fit into a lazy schedule but proper enough to feel like proper exercise. The park itself is well-positioned for exploring the Kintyre and Cowal coastline, so Am Binneag works as a natural pairing with beach days and shoreline wandering.
