Alum House Wood

The woodland floor here is carpeted thick with moss and leaf litter, the kind of place where you genuinely need to watch your footing. Alum House Wood sits just outside Preston and makes for a proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at the bigger Lancashire reserves. It's dense, quiet, and genuinely feels like you've stepped away from things even though the town is nearby.

You're looking at a straightforward forest walk through native broadleaf trees. The paths are well-used but not overdone, and there's something about old woodland that just works for clearing your head. Walkers will get the most from it - the kind of people who enjoy a solid hour or two of tramping about with no real destination. History types might appreciate the old industrial heritage lurking in the names (the alum works that gave it its name are long gone, but the landscape remembers). Small kids can manage it if they're decent on their legs, though there's not much to hold their attention once the initial novelty of crunching through dead leaves wears off.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-morning slot if you're staying at Northwood Caravan & Holiday Park just down the road - literally 3.5 miles away. Dale Hey Farm and Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley are slightly further out but still within easy reach for a morning outing. The woodland itself is fairly compact, so give yourself an hour to ninety minutes maximum. Go when it's been dry for a day or two - the moss gets slippery otherwise and the whole experience becomes less pleasant.
