Altar Stones Nature Reserve

Out on the edge of Leicester's commuter belt, Altar Stones Nature Reserve is one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find it. The stones themselves are Bronze Age relics - standing alone in what's now managed grassland and scrub, they've been here for thousands of years watching the landscape change around them. What you get is archaeology without the museum ropes, and open countryside views that genuinely surprise you given how close you are to the city.

It's proper walker territory. The reserve sits within easy reach of decent footpaths, and the seasonal wildflowers here can be exceptional if you time it right - late spring through early summer is when you'll see the scrubland really come alive. The stones themselves don't take long to see, but the walk to them and around the reserve could easily fill a morning. Families with children old enough to manage rough terrain will find it engaging; younger kids might lose interest once they've touched the rocks and taken a photo.

Historically-minded visitors will get more from the site if they do a bit of homework beforehand - the Reserve Trust has information, though signage on the ground is minimal. It's free to access and there's no specific visiting hours, which means you can turn up when it suits you.
