Allt y Lan

The forest at Allt y Lan sweeps down a steep hillside just outside Carmarthen, all conifers and a surprising amount of quiet. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - proper woodland walking territory where the paths are well-maintained but never crowded. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey Welsh days it feels atmospheric. You're looking at maybe an hour or two here depending on how far you want to push into it; the incline isn't gentle, so it's not a stroll for small legs or anyone after a flat amble.

What makes it work is the lack of fuss. No car park drama, no visitor centre noise, just forest. The walks take you through dense tree cover with occasional breaks where you can see down the valley towards Carmarthen itself. Bring proper footwear - the ground gets boggy in places and tree roots have a habit of catching unwary boots. It's excellent for anyone who actually enjoys a bit of effort with their walk, or families with older kids who can handle a proper hike.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Ravenscroft Retreats or Route 47 are both within a few miles - this makes a solid half-day out without needing to drive far. Pair it with a walk around Carmarthen town itself and you've got a decent day. Go morning rather than late afternoon; the light doesn't hang around long under the trees, and you don't want to be navigating that descent in poor visibility.
