Allt Pencraig

Allt Pencraig is a proper forest walk in the rolling countryside just outside Cardigan, and it's the sort of place that rewards you for bothering to find it. The woodland trails wind through mixed broadleaf and conifer trees, giving you that genuine forest feel without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots along the Ceredigion coast.

It's ideal for walkers after a quiet morning or afternoon among the trees. The terrain is manageable - nothing too steep - which means families with younger kids can tackle it, though toddlers might find the muddy patches annoying after rain. History types won't find much heritage here, but that's rather the point. This is about fresh air and the simple pleasure of following paths through decent woodland, spotting the occasional bird or, if you're lucky, catching sight of deer.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, longer if you want to sit about and soak in the peace. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I can find, so come prepared with water and snacks. Parking is likely free, though check locally when you arrive.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Llety, Brynawelon, or Mwnt are all within a few miles - this makes a solid half-day outing to break up a seaside holiday. Combine it with a coastal walk or a visit to Cardigan itself, and you've got a proper day sorted. Best visited in spring or autumn when the trees are at their most interesting and the crowds at the beaches have thinned out.
