Allt Nant-y-boncath

You'll find yourself surrounded by towering conifers and broadleaf woodland the moment you enter Allt Nant-y-boncath, just outside Carmarthen. The forest isn't fancy - there are no visitor centres or manicured trails here - but that's precisely what makes it worth a visit. Locals use it properly, walking dogs and running off the beaten path through decent woodland that feels genuinely Welsh rather than packaged for tourists.

The main draw is simply walking. Paths wind through the trees with a decent stream running through the lower sections, which my kids found genuinely interesting rather than just pretty. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour easily, though you won't feel like you're on some grand expedition. Muddy boots are guaranteed, so pack accordingly.

Real talk: it's not going to blow your mind. If you're after dramatic gorges or mountain views, look elsewhere. But if you want a proper stretch through proper woodland without crowds, it delivers. Best in autumn when the light filters through differently and the air smells like actual forest rather than nothing.

Its proximity to Woodland Rise Camping and Caravan Park makes it a natural pairing for a longer Carmarthenshire stay. The park itself is five miles away, so easily accessible for an afternoon wander. Bring waterproofs, avoid peak weekends if solitude matters to you, and don't expect facilities - it's free and it's feral in the best way.
