Allt Clun-coch

Dense woodland carpets the hillsides here, creating one of those proper Welsh forest experiences where the outside world simply vanishes. Allt Clun-coch sprawls across the Ceredigion countryside near Dyfed, offering miles of walking tracks that wind through mixed woodland - mainly oak and birch with the odd Scots pine thrown in for good measure.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore, though anyone expecting marked trails might be disappointed. This is more about striking out on your own and seeing where the paths lead. The terrain can be fairly steep in places, so decent walking boots are essential.

Birdwatchers have a field day here. I spotted red kites circling overhead within minutes of arriving, and the deeper woods echo with woodpecker calls. Spring brings bluebells in proper abundance, while autumn turns the canopy into something quite spectacular.

For those staying at nearby sites like Glyncoch Isaf or Wild Meadow Camping, it's an excellent way to burn off a morning before heading to the coast. The forest feels genuinely wild - no visitor centres or car parks, just you and several square miles of Welsh woodland. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it justice, longer if you're the type to stop and actually look at things.
