Allestree Park

A sprawling 147 acres of woodland, meadow and water just outside Belper, Allestree Park feels properly removed from the world despite being barely any distance from civilisation. The lake dominates - peaceful water fringed by mature trees, with a decent network of walking trails threading through the grounds. You'll spot water birds regularly, and the woodland sections give you that real sense of being somewhere wild, not just a manicured local park.

Walkers will get the most from this place. The paths are well-maintained and there's enough variety to stop you getting bored - open grassland one minute, dense woodland the next, then you're back by the water. It's the kind of spot where you can easily spend two hours pottering about without rushing, or you can knock out a proper walk if you're after something more energetic. Families with younger kids will find enough to explore, though older children might exhaust the novelty after an hour or so.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours - you just turn up. Early morning is when you'll see the most wildlife. If you're camping at The Firs Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, Allestree makes an excellent morning or evening outing. The woodland trails connect nicely, and you won't feel like you're retracing your steps each time you visit.
