All Saints Church, Milton

The church sits on a slight rise in Milton village, about four miles east of Cambridge - easy enough to find if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. All Saints is a proper medieval building, all flint and stone, with a tower that's visible from the surrounding fields. Walk in and you'll find a surprisingly peaceful interior, the kind of place where you can actually hear the wind outside rattling the windows.

What strikes you first is how genuinely old it all feels. The chancel and nave date back centuries, and there's enough medieval detail to keep history buffs contentedly occupied for twenty minutes or so - carved roof timbers, stone work, the usual ecclesiastical fixtures. It's not a showstopper like Cambridge's King's College Chapel, but that's partly the appeal. You'll have the place largely to yourself.

This works well as a gentle addition to a park-based holiday in the area. Chittering Park is under five miles away, and Fen End Farm just beyond that, so it's a straightforward drive or even a decent cycle ride if you're up for it. Pair it with a walk around Milton's quieter lanes - there's not much else in the village, mind you, but that's rather the point. Perfect for a morning potter before heading back to base.

The church is free to enter during daylight hours, though access can be unpredictable - village churches sometimes lock up outside service times. Don't trek out here without checking ahead or you'll be peering through the windows like a tourist at the zoo.
