All Saints' Church, Landbeach

The church sits on the edge of Landbeach village, just a few miles northeast of Cambridge, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard with how much character it's got. All Saints' isn't trying to impress you - it just gets on with being a proper medieval church, all flint and stone, with a tower that's been watching over the Fens for centuries.

Inside, there's genuine medieval work: wall paintings that have survived centuries of whitewash and neglect, carved misericords in the chancel, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually think about why you came. If you're into church architecture or medieval history, you'll find real things to study here rather than yet another Victorian restoration job.

It's not a destination attraction in itself - you won't spend more than forty minutes poking about - but it slots perfectly into a Cambridgeshire loop. Cambridge itself is so close you could do both in a day, and if you're staying at Chittering Park just down the road, it's an easy detour on a walk. The village is tiny and undisturbed, which is rather the point.

Free to visit, as most parish churches are, though opening hours aren't always predictable. Ring ahead or try during daylight on a weekend. Best suited to history enthusiasts and church explorers rather than families after a full day's activity - kids will get restless after a bit.
