All Saints' Church

The church sits in Cottenham, a few miles northeast of Cambridge, its tower rising above the Fenland flatness in a way that makes you realise how this place once dominated the local landscape. All Saints' is a proper medieval church - the sort that rewards a slow wander round both inside and out, with decent medieval stonework and the kind of accumulated history you'd expect from a building that's been here for centuries.

Inside, it's quieter than you might expect, with decent light through the windows and the usual mix of pews, memorials, and architectural details that tell you something about who lived here and what they cared about. The tower's worth a look from outside if you're interested in medieval church building - there's decent work there if you know what to look for. This isn't a showpiece church with crowds or visitor facilities, which honestly means you might have the place to yourself.

It suits walkers and church historians most. Not really a destination in itself unless you're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture, but absolutely worth the detour if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Ferry Meadows or Guilden Gate are both within a twenty-minute drive. Cottenham itself is small and forgettable beyond the church, so treat it as a break from the campsite rather than a day out on its own.

Free to visit, as most parish churches are. Allow half an hour, longer if you're photographing details. Check the website before you go - opening hours aren't fixed and sometimes it's locked during the week.
